What is a Canopy Bed?
A bed canopy is a bedding decoration consisting primarily of a curtain made of neutral, colored, or themed fabric. It is attached to the ceiling, a wall, or a bedpost. Its top can be flat, domed, or shaped like a capital.
The Story of the Canopy Bed
Originally, this was a medieval method invented by peasants in Western Europe. Sleeping on the bare floor in worn wooden houses with thatched roofs, they found nests of birds and spiders readily established. They then decided to place large pieces of fabric near the ceilings to protect themselves from dead insects and bird droppings falling on them during the night .
This technique was later adopted by the nobility, who saw it as a perfect way to create privacy. Indeed, at that time, masters of the house and servants slept in the same room or hall for practical reasons. Around the master’s bed, colorful curtains embroidered with noble and royal motifs were then placed. This is how the canopy bed, the ancestor of the modern bed canopy, came into being.
This bedroom decoration was later enhanced by the Sun King . He transformed it into a magnificent luxury item that provided warmth during the colder months . The French royal style, which captivated all of Europe, allowed the four-poster bed to become established in European courts throughout the continent . It was at this time that the concept of “luxury” was born, a concept that would disappear with the French Revolution of 1789 and then experience a resurgence after the Second World War.
Today’s bed canopy has become more accessible, simply a piece of fabric that drapes gracefully over the entire bed. They are available in all styles and for all ages.
How to choose the right canopy bed?
First, who will the bed canopy be for? If it’s for your newborn, most baby bed canopies attach directly to a bed frame hanging from the crib or to a wall. The goal is to create the most serene atmosphere possible and to dim the light so they can sleep soundly. Bed canopies for children and adults are most often attached to the ceiling.
Next, what style and material do you want? Keep in mind that today, 95% of bed canopies are made of cotton and polyester. However, the comfort and quality of the fabric will depend on the design you’re looking for and your budget. Carefully consider the style, color scheme, and atmosphere of your room when choosing the color of your bed canopy. For simple protection against nighttime pests, a mesh canopy will suffice. For a designer canopy to enhance the bedroom décor, an opaque fabric canopy will be perfect. The color selection is vast, as all are available. Themed bed canopies are also available for babies and children.
Next comes the price! For baby bed canopies, expect to pay between €20 and €50. A good children’s bed canopy will cost over €40. And for adult bed canopies, the price range varies between €40 and €100. Keep in mind that mosquito net canopies of all types are the least expensive.

How to install a canopy bed?
There are several ways to install a bed canopy, as there are different types, as previously mentioned. Here are the main methods:
To attach a bed canopy to the ceiling : Mark the location of your hole, then drill carefully, adjusting the drill bit according to your ceiling size. Insert a wall plug into the hole, then screw a hook into the plug. All you have to do then is hang your bed canopy from it.
To attach a bed canopy to the ceiling without drilling : You have three options. Use an adhesive hook by simply sticking it where you want to hang your canopy. Or, create your own support using modeling clay . Or, attach your canopy directly to the ceiling with double-sided tape.
To attach to a crib canopy : In this case, it’s a baby crib canopy. Take a rope and simply attach the canopy to the end of the canopy. The crib canopy is usually included with the crib. However, if it isn’t, you can make one yourself .
To attach to a wall bracket : If the wall bracket has a gap, then place your bed canopy across the two parallel gaps. Otherwise, simply place it in the center where it needs to be attached. If you don’t have a wall bracket, you can easily build one .
How to make your own canopy bed
To make your bed canopy you will need: a hoop (wood, plastic, metal…according to your taste), voile-style curtains and a rope.
First, we recommend refinishing the chosen hoop, as it can be much more elegant with your personal touch. Next, cut it with scissors or a utility knife to create openings for your curtains. Arrange the curtains harmoniously. Then, attach the rope to the ends of the hoop so you can hang it from the ceiling like a chandelier. Finally, you can embellish your canopy bed with decorative elements such as garlands, flowers, dreamcatchers, ribbons, etc.
It’s gorgeous! All you have to do is hang it in your bedroom above the bed!
