A four-poster bed is a generic term for a bed frame primarily made of wood or metal. It consists of four posts that support a large canopy or curtain above the bed. Its function is to protect against the cold and provide complete privacy. The four-poster bed originated in the Middle Ages for lords and their families. Still very popular today, it is the larger counterpart of the bed canopy.
